Sedge-rich Woodlands

Sedge-rich Woodland occurs on poorly drained lateritic soils in the region where the annual rainfall is 500-600 mm. Structurally, this vegetation consists of an open, medium height woodland of Yellow Gum Eucalyptus leucoxylon over a sparse layer of low shrubs including Guinea-flowers Hibbertia spp., Hakeas Hakea spp. and Common Fringe Myrtle Calytix tetragona. The ground layer carries a diversity of sedges including Centrolepis Centrolepis spp., Sword-sedges Lepidosperma spp., Club-sedges Isolepis spp., Spike-sedges Eleocharis spp., Bristle-sedges Chorizandra spp. and Rushes Juncus spp. and some herbs. Grasses are uncommon although Swamp Wallaby-grasses Amphibromus spp. may be present in wetter areas.Yellow Gum Eucalyptus leucoxylon

This is a restricted vegetation type in the region being recorded from low-lying areas to the north of the Grampians and in swales associated with Quaternary sand deposits further west between Horsham and Edenhope. Large areas of this vegetation type have been cleared on private land since European settlement.
