|The present noxious weed list in Victoria is outdated - with no systematic review of the weeds since 1974. A minor revision occurred with the proclamation of the new legislation, The Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 (CaLPAct) and again in 2003 - but the status of most of the weeds has not changed for at least 30 years. Through their Regional Weed Action Strategies, CMAs have updated their priorities and actions against specific weeds, but the legal listings are sometimes inconsistent with these documents.|
This will be the first systematic review of the noxious weed list in Victoria since 1974. To try and reduce the possible negative impact of the review, consultation, communication and extension with regional staff, Catchment management Authorities (CMAs) and other stakeholders on the principles and process of the review has been underway since 2002. The review process is following the principles contained in the Proposed National Technical Specification for Post-Border Weed Risk management produced by the CRC for Australian Weed Management.
The review of Victorian noxious weeds is organised into three phases:
- Phase 1 - review the existing list of declared noxious weeds (101 species);
- Phase 2 - assess the potential of regional priority weeds not already declared in Victoria, but noted in Regional Weed Action Plans (nine species in total);
- Phase 3 - assess the potential of other weed species identified as important for the State. This includes species on the Weeds of National Significance (WONS) list, the National Environmental Alert List and other species nominated by the community through the Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs).
Phase 1 was completed in June 2004, Phase 2 assessments were completed in July 2006 and Phase 3a assessments were completed in July 2006 and 3b assessments were completed in February 2008.
