Yarrawonga Landscape Plan

This Landscape Plan for the Yarrawonga Landscape Zone - July 2003, was produced in collaboration between L. Ahern - Nature Scope Pty Ltd; S. Macfarlane - Biodiversity and Natural Resources Division, DSE; K. Handley and M. Howell - Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority

The Yarrawonga Landscape Zone consists of landforms typical of the Murray Fans bioregion, it lies within the Broken River Basin. It is serviced by a network of artificial drains and irrigation channels. It is comprised of two main land systems—floodplain and riverine plain. The floodplain system includes ox-bows, meander scrolls and occasional source bordering dunes. Due to periodic flooding and heavy soils, the floodplain is unsuitable for general farming purposes and supports mostly reserved forest. The riverine plain, occupying most of the zone, is characteristically well-drained, with leveed prior streams and wind-blown sand dunes. Pre-1750 vegetation on the riverine plain now used for dryland farming typically supported riverine grassy woodland (v), black box chenopod woodland (e) or riverine grassy woodland / riverina plains grassy woodland / black box chenopod woodland complex (e). Only small patches of pre-1750 woodland types remain in the dryland farming districts and even fewer survive in the irrigation farming districts. The exceptions, throughout the riverine plain, are on roadsides, especially where road reserves are 40m or even 60m wide. The Yarrawonga Landscape Zone supports important populations of Broad-shelled Tortoise, Bush Stone-curlew, Giant Bullfrog, Golden Perch, Great Egret, Grey-crowned Babbler, Murray Cod, Nankeen Night Heron and River Swamp Wallaby-grass. This zone contains no wetlands of international importance however, it contains various wetlands of national importance along river frontages.
