The Tower Hill Landscape Zone consists of stony and undulating volcanic plains from recent volcanic activity and undulating volcanic plains. Average annual rainfall is 726 mm at Warrnambool and generally decreases with distance from the coast. The zone formerly supported a range of vegetation types with extensive areas of Basalt Shrubby Woodland and a mosaic of Stony Knoll Shrubland, Pains Grassy Woodland and Plains Grassy Wetland communities, with Swamp Scrub and Plains Grassy Wetland to the north and west of Tower Hill. The eastern part of the zone was dominated by Plains Grassy Woodland with Plains Swampy Woodland and Herb-rich Foothills Forest. Nearly all of the original native vegetation has been cleared and the hydrology altered through extensive land drainage systems. There are few conservation reserves and little native vegetation remains on private land. The zone supports significant populations of Gorae Leek-orchid, and Tower Hill is listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia.
