Timmering Dryland Landscape Plan

This Landscape Plan for the Timmering Dryland Landscape Zone - June 2003, was produced in collaboration between L. Ahern - Nature Scope Pty Ltd; K. Lowe - Biodiversity and Natural Resources Division, DSE; K. Handley and M. Howell - Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority; D. Robinson - Regional Services, DSE & Trust for Nature.
The Timmering Dryland Landscape zone consists predominantly of flat plain, across which the channels and terraces of the present-day drainage lines run, with the exception of a localised protrusion of sedimentary rock that occurs at Mt Scobie (120 m). The main natural drainage system in the zone is via Cornella and Wanalta Creek systems into the Corop Lakes, and a complex of artificial drains and channels has been installed to service local areas. Stream condition is moderate to poor. The pre-1750 vegetation cover within the zone comprised plains grassy woodland, plains grassland, Pine box woodland, gilgai plain woodland / wetland mosaic. The loss of all of the above EVCs (except box ironbark forest) from the Timmering Dryland zone is near complete. Scattered woodland or grassland remnants of rarely more than a few hectares are all that is to be found across most of the vast plains of the zone and, even throughout the Corop Lakes system, only four or five former natural wetlands retain significant amounts (> 50 ha) of their original vegetation types. Dairying and mixed farming predominates on the better-drained soils. Low-intensity irrigation mixed farming takes place on the heavier clay soils. Remnant networks relying heavily upon roadsides, drainage lines and small wetlands are likely to form the basis of plans for habitat restoration at the local area level in this zone. Little Egret, Intermediate Egret, Swift Parrot, Little Bittern, Black Falcon, Red Swainson-pea, Yarran Wattle, Buloke Mistletoe and Bluish Raspwort are priority species that occur in the zone. Key public land areas include the Corop and Lake Cooper wetlands.
