Strathbogie Landscape Plan

This Landscape Plan for the Strathbogie Landscape Zone - August 2003, was produced in collaboration between S. Way & E. Moysey - Ecology Australia, Fairfield; K. Lowe & H. Anderson - Biodiversity and Natural Resources Division, DSE; M. Howell - Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority.

The Strathbogie Landscape Zone is mostly covered by the Highlands - Northern Fall bioregion which reaches across the broad Strathbogie massif. The massif is largely cleared, but the higher plateau and steep escarpments are forested (LCC 1973a) and drained by the Sevens Creek system. The Central Victorian Uplands bioregion forms the northern part of the zone which contains the southern reaches of the alluvial Benalla Plain. The predominant EVCs are Grassy Dry Forest, Valley Grassy Forest and Herb-rich Foothill Forest. The Strathbogie Landscape Zone maintains high levels of biodiversity, despite extensive softwood plantations and farmland, due largely to the State Forest and larger remnants still existing on freehold land. The State Forests support a diverse mammal and bird fauna including breeding records of the Common Bent-wing Bat, Eastern Horse-shoe Bat, Powerful Owl, Square-tailed Kite, Squirrel Glider, Turquoise Parrot, Yellow-bellied Glider and Greater Glider. The main threats to biodiversity in the Strathbogie Landscape Zone include gully and sheet erosion on northern montane slopes and, to a lesser extent on the foothills. Dryland salinity is a problem evident on freehold land adjacent to colluvial slopes of the Strathbogie plateau, as well as the continued clearing and/or fragmentation of remnants.
