Samaria Landscape Plan

This Landscape Plan for the Samaria Landscape Zone - August 2003, was produced in collaboration between S. Way & E. Moysey - Ecology Australia, Fairfield; K. Lowe & H. Anderson - Biodiversity and Natural Resources Division, DSE; M. Howell - Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority.

The Samaria Landscape Zone is mainly contained within the Central Victorian Uplands bioregion, with Highlands - Northern Fall bioregion occurring throughout the Tolmie Highlands to the east and occurs in association with the stream systems of Middle and Ryan Creeks. Lake Nillahcootie (D9) a major irrigation storage, is located on the riverine plain of the Broken River in the Central Victorian Uplands bioregion. The predominant EVCs are Grassy Dry Forest, Heathy Dry Forest, Herb-rich Foothill Forest and Valley Grassy Forest. The central areas of Samaria Landscape Zone have a relatively high level of biodiversity. The wetlands of Lake Nillahcootie provide habitat for a variety of waterfowl, and disused railway reserves north-east of Swanpool contain threatened flora species. State Forest and reserves such as Mount Samaria and Hat Hill support a variety of wildlife and threatened flora such as Broom Scale-rush, Cliff Cudweed, Dookie Daisy, Highland Bush-pea and Stalked Guinea Flower. Dryland salinity, particularly around Samaria and Tatong, as well as sheet erosion in cleared agricultural areas threaten biodiversity values. Weeds, particularly blackberries in disturbed areas, are also of concern and fire risk is high throughout the State Forests and larger reserves such at Mt. Samaria State Park.
