The Southern Goulburn Landscape zone includes much of the extensive residential and industrial development centred on Shepparton and Mooroopna. The land system along the course of the Goulburn is categorised as floodplain, with ox bows, meander scrolls and occasional source bordering dunes. The surrounding riverine plain land system is well-drained, and flat to gently undulating in the north of the zone. The most widespread pre-1750 vegetation on the riverine plain was plains grassy woodland, however in slightly elevated or better-drained districts pine box woodland / riverina plains grassy woodland mosaic prevailed. The floodplain of the Goulburn was largely vegetated with riverine grassy woodland / riverine sedgy forest / wetland mosaic, dominated by River Red Gum. However, patches of sand ridge woodland, dominated by White Cypress-pine, occurred on localised ridges or dunes near the edges of the floodplain. Today, the floodplain coverage of riverine grassy woodland / riverine sedgy forest / wetland mosaic persists, though mostly in a highly degraded state. Likewise, the floodplain riparian woodland along the Broken River survives, in a less robust condition. Although the extensive woodland EVCs of the open riverine plain have all but vanished from private land, many linear remnants tenuously remain on roadsides, especially in proximity to the major river and creek systems. The floodplain corridor of the Goulburn River running through this zone has high values for recreation and nature conservation and has overlying Heritage River status. Priority sites include Reedy Swamp Wildlife Reserve; any Goulburn River State Forest blocks; any Streamside Reserves on the Goulburn River; any Public Land Water Frontage on Broken River, Honeysuckle Creek and Seven Creeks; Bushland Reserves; and good-quality roadside remnants associated with any of these sites.
