The Mount Elephant Landscape Zone consists of undulating volcanic plains and undulating stony volcanic plains with a band of stony rises, a scoria cone and granite outcrops. The average annual rainfall at Lismore is approximately 620 mm. Prior to 1750, Plains Grassy Woodland intergrading with Plains Grassland was the dominant vegetation over much of this zone. The vast majority of native vegetation in the region has been cleared for agriculture. Lake Rosine Wildlife Reserve is the only substantial conservation reserve. Relatively intact remnants are generally restricted to small public land sites and significant wetland areas remain on private land. A number of road and rail reserves support significant areas of native grassland, with Chatsworth Road being one of the most important areas of native grassland remaining in the Victorian Volcanic Plain. The zone includes important populations of Spiny Rice-flower, Golden Cowslips, Fragrant Leek-orchid, Small Milkwort, Corangamite Water Skink, Brolga and Striped Legless Lizard. The Banongill Wetlands and Widderin Swamps are listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia.
