The Moorookyle Landscape Zone consists of undulating basalt plains, alluvial terraces and creeklines surrounded by gentle sedimentary ridges and slopes, with numerous large volcanoes in the south. The zone drains to the north and the average annual rainfall varies from 750 mm at Creswick to around 500 mm in the north. Pre-1750 vegetation featured extensive areas of Plains Grassy Woodland intergrading with Plains Grassland as rainfall decreases to the north. Nearly all plains woodland and grassland remnants have been cleared and there are few reserves in the zone. Clunes Swamp (Merrin Merrin) is listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia. The zone supports populations of Plump Swamp Wallaby-grass, Hairy Anchor Plant, Wetland Blown-grass, Striped Legless Lizard, Woodland Blind Snake, Brolga, Swift Parrot, Freckled Duck, Great Egret, Glossy Ibis and a number of other wetland birds.
