Karabeal Landscape Plan

This Landscape Plan for the Karabeal Landscape Zone - May 2003, was produced in collaboration between J. Ross - Environmental Consultant - New Zealand; K. Lowe, C. Boyle & A. Moorrees - Parks, Flora, Fauna Division, DSE.

The Karabeal Landscape Zone consists of undulating volcanic plains and has an average annual rainfall of approximately 650mm decreasing slightly to the north and east. Pre-1750 vegetation cover would have comprised primarily of Plains Grassy Woodland. The vast majority of the native vegetation has been cleared for agriculture. A few highly significant areas remain on public land and there are some relatively large areas of native grassland on private land. The vast majority of land is freehold with very few conservation reserves or public land. The zone includes important populations of Gorae Leek-Orchid, Adamson’s Blown-grass, Plump Swamp Wallaby-grass, Small Milkwort, Clover Glycine and Striped Legless Lizard.
