Buxton Landscape Plan

This Landscape Plan for the Buxton Landscape Zone - August 2003, was produced in collaboration between S. Way & E. Moysey - Ecology Australia, Fairfield; K. Lowe & H. Anderson - Biodiversity and Natural Resources Division, DSE; M. Howell - Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority.

The Buxton Landscape Zone is one of only two zones in the Upper Goulburn that contains the Victorian Alps bioregion. The foothill forests and river valleys of the Highlands - Northern Fall bioregion occupy about two-thirds of the area of the zone, occurring in association mainly with the stream systems of the Acheron, Little, Rubicon and Royston Rivers. These streams provide most of the drainage from the zone, predominantly in a northerly direction to the Goulburn River. Vegetation cover on the foothills and in the valleys is primarily Herb-rich Foothill Forest, Damp Forest, and Grassy Dry Forest, with Riparian Forest forming relatively narrow lines along waterways and drainage lines. The Victorian Alps bioregion takes in approximately the south-eastern third of the zone. The EVCs here are predominantly Montane Wet Forest and Montane Damp Forest. Overall the zone retains a high level of biodiversity, due to the relatively large areas retaining indigenous vegetation cover, and the high diversity of vegetation and habitat types contained therein. State Forest occupies large areas of the zone. Environmental threats within the zone include ongoing weed invasion, further fragmentation of remnants on private land, and degradation of riparian vegetation.
