Barmah Landscape Plan

This Landscape Plan for the Barmah Landscape Zone - July 2003, was produced in collaboration between L. Ahern - Nature Scope Pty Ltd; S. Macfarlane - Biodiversity and Natural Resources Division, DSE; K. Handley and M. Howell - Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority.

The Barmah Landscape Zone consists of landforms typical of the Murray Fans bioregion. It incorporates a number of distinct land system components—Kanyapella Basin, the Goulburn River floodplain (below Coomboona), Broken Creek (west of Waaia) and Barmah Forest. Prior to 1750, vegetation on the floodplain land system within the zone consisted of River Red Gum-dominated riverine grassy woodland / riverine sedgy forest / wetland mosaic (d), within which patches of plains grassy woodland (e) (Grey and Yellow Box). On the adjacent plain, pine box woodland / riverina plains grassy woodland mosaic (e) predominated while, further away still from major drainage lines, plains grassy woodland (e) prevailed. Very little trace remains of these two EVCs which flanked the north of Broken Creek. Around Kanyapella Basin, the formerly extensive black box chenopod woodland (e) and riverine grassy woodland / riverina plains grassy woodland / black box chenopod woodland complex (e) have vanished. The Barmah Landscape Zone supports important populations of Barking Marsh Frog, Bush Stone-curlew, Giant Bullfrog, Glossy Ibis, Golden Perch, Great Egret, Grey-crowned Babbler, Little Bittern, Mueller Daisy, Murray Cod, Nankeen Night Heron, River Swamp Wallaby-grass, Royal Spoonbill, Silver Perch, Small Scurf-pea, Squirrel Glider, Superb Parrot, Woodland Blind Snake and a suite of other wetland flora and fauna. The Barmah Landscape Zone contains the internationally important wetlands (Barmah Ramsar site) and several small nationally important wetlands.
