The Ballarat Landscape Zone consists of undulating basalt plains, alluvial terraces and creeklines surrounded by gentle sedimentary ridges and slopes. Numerous volcanoes and two large lakes occur in the south. Most of the zone drains northwards and the average annual rainfall ranges from 500 mm in the north to 710 mm in the south. Pre-1750 vegetation largely consisted of Plains Grassy Woodland communities that intergraded with Plains Grassland in the southwest and north as rainfall decreased. There are few remnants of the original plains vegetation in the zone and no substantial conservation reserves. The zone supports populations of Spiny Rice-flower, Clover Glycine, Brolga, Fat-tailed Dunnart and Swift Parrot.
