Land Degradation

The Werribee Plains Region is part of the Port Phillip and Westernport catchment management region. The tunnel and gully erosion maps provided here are subsets from the original statewide data presented in the articles on tunnel erosion and gully erosion in the Statewide VRO website, so that the accuracy of information has not been improved.

Most tunnels were located in the north and north-west of the region although some may have been destroyed (such as those mapped by
Forbes in 1948) whilst new tunnels may have formed elsewhere and are not marked. It should be noted that much of the incidence of tunnel erosion was found in the Parwan Valley near Glenmore and that land has not been reclaimed. Owing to the peculiar landscape in that area, other parts of the region may not be as susceptible to the tunnelling process.

This map shows the spatial distribution of gully erosion in the region. This distribution may have altered since the time the map was constructed. The highest density of gullying is < 0.2 km/km
2 and bore some coincidence with the pattern of tunnel erosion. Gully density is rated as `low` in most of the region.
