| .A number of mallee outliers occur within the region most notably north of Bendigo in the Whipstick, Kamarooka State Park, and near Inglewood, Wedderburn and St Arnaud. Generally, this vegetation develops on infertile gravelly sediments in areas receiving less than 400 mm rainfall per annum. Organic matter is low and soil structure is poor and subject to drought. The overstorey is usually dominated by Mallee-form trees such as Bull Mallee Eucalyptus behriana, Blue Mallee E. polybractea and Green Mallee E. viridis. The understorey is dominated by Broombush Melaleuca uncinata, Epacrids Astroloma spp., Composites, Grevilleas and Myrtles Calytrix spp., with a number of annual herbs, particularly daisies and geophytes such as orchids and lilies. Grasses are generally uncommon. This vegetation type is still widespread in the region and reserved in a number of locations, although a number of areas are still available for eucalyptus oil production. EVCs:
