Here are red soils derived from the basalt plain. In the previous slide the soils were grey. The red soils are more fertile and retain more moisture. Potato growing is an important use of them. Major Mitchell would have seen volcanic cones like these from his Mt Greenock lookout. The area is well to the east of the McHugh's Gully.
