Stream Condition and Water Quality
It has been proposed that a River Health Strategy be developed for Victoria as a key component of the Government's River and Catchment Restoration Program. The aim of the Strategy is to set a statewide policy for integrated management of Victoria's rivers, their associated wetlands and estuaries.

The Victorian Catchment Management Council (external link) in collaboration with DSE and various other agencies has developed a vision for Victorian Rivers - Rivers 2050 - The Future of Rivers in Victoria. This is an important starting point for the development of a statewide strategy.

River health is addressed by the Glenelg-Hopkins Catchment Management Authority, (external link) Landcare Groups and Southern Rural Water. (external link)
River management involves assessment and monitoring environmental flows, fish passage, floodplain management and implementing waterway health plans. Management of rivers and streams also relates closely to a whole catchment’s water health throughout the region. Consideration of water status and monitoring river water health is also necessary when preparing river and stream management programs in the Glenelg-Hopkins Catchment Management Region.
